Salt air is a maintenance schedule, not a mood

Coastal San Diego homes are exposed to something inland homes simply are not: a continuous, fine aerosol of sea salt carried inland on the onshore breeze. It settles on every horizontal and vertical surface within a few miles of the shoreline, and because the particles are hygroscopic — they pull moisture out of the air — they stay damp far longer than ordinary household dust.

That matters because a damp salt film is chemically active. It accelerates oxidation on cabinet hardware, hinges, faucet bases, window tracks, light fixtures, appliance trim, and outdoor railings. Homeowners in La Jolla and Del Mar often describe the result the same way: fixtures that looked new eighteen months ago now show pitting or a chalky bloom that ordinary wiping does not lift.

The important insight is that this is not a cleaning failure. It is a cadence failure. Salt deposition is continuous, so the countermeasure has to be scheduled rather than reactive. The three coastal exposures, ranked by damage cost

Salt aerosol is the first exposure and the most expensive one, because it attacks metal and sealed stone rather than fabric. Left on a surface, it works into micro-scratches in a finish and lifts it from underneath. The fix is sequence-dependent: the film must be dissolved and carried away, not redistributed with a dry cloth, which is the most common mistake we see in homes that clean often but still show corrosion.

Marine-layer humidity is the second. San Diego's coastal strip runs materially more humid than its inland valleys for months at a time, and interior spaces with poor air exchange — walk-in closets, guest baths, north-facing bedroom corners, under-sink cabinets — hold that moisture. The result is musty odor and, eventually, staining on grout lines and drywall paint.

Sand ingress is the third and the most mechanical. Fine silica tracked in from the beach behaves like a very slow abrasive underfoot. On hardwood and luxury vinyl plank it dulls the wear layer along traffic paths; the damage shows up as a matte lane through an otherwise glossy floor. Entry strategy matters more here than cleaning frequency does.
